Working with community physicians on more effective medical treatment for workers with potentially disabling conditions can produce dramatic savings. A recent study of management of musculoskeletal disability resulting from occupational injuries suggests that focused communications to physicians about evidence-based treatment guidelines, availability and appropriateness of light duty, appropriate medications and availability of onsite PT can have a huge impact on reducing medical costs while increasing productivity and quality of life for workers.
