Employers increasingly are focused on how plan design affects benefit utilization. They are growing increasingly aware that decreasing utilization isn't always a good thing. This Insights explores that issue in the context of short-term disability plan design, drawing on data from the IBI Benchmarking database. The analysis steals a peek at what will be offered participants in IBI Benchmarking for 2007 data. Some of the results are surprising. Others, show the fundamental trade-off between the reduced management opportunity versus the reduced STD incidence that comes from a longer elimination period.
